Faded

I was never supposed to be famous. I was a lyricist, not a singer. Certainly not a star. Too bad none of that seemed to matter to a rock-god like Ryder Woods. He didn’t just want my words — he wanted everything. And he took it. My songs. My voice. My goddamned soul. Between those haunting bedroom eyes and that heart-stopping grin, I never stood a chance. I was pulled into...

This is my second book by Julie Johnson and while I quite enjoyed the first (

), this one blew my socks off! I seriously was not expecting that...

Does that mean everything was perfect? No. Were there issues? Yes. But sometimes you just have to go with your gut and my gut is very happy with this story.

The story starts out with Felicity ending up in Nashville with hardly any money after her expensive bus ride. She goes to an infamous bar and gets a waitressing job, claiming to be twenty-one when she's only eighteen.

Because the bar is known for finding new acts, there is quite the rotation going through. This is when Felicity hears Ryder sing and she is blown away. He feels the same way when he sees her and he really connects with her after hearing her sing.

But she's not a singer, she's a songwriter. Have you seen that movie

? Well, this story loosely reminded me of that movie.

She's feeling at home in town and all Ryder wants to do is get out of town. Due to some circumstances beyond his control, he gets offered a record contract. The problem is they only want him and the other singer in their band.

However, the main problem at this point, is that he doesn't want to leave Felicity but he has a hard time recognizing and reconciling that with his dream to leave town. It leads to a lot of problems and a whole helluva lot of angst.

Unfortunately, this isn't the only problem plaguing Felicity and Ryder. She has a past that's coming back to haunt her and he develops an issue that's tied to her past. I felt his issue was a bit contrived and not wholly believable...or better yet, there was not enough time for it to really become an "issue".

I really enjoyed Ryder and Felicity together...their relationship, their song writing and their shared values. You can help but root for them and hope they can solve their problems...

Ryder's issue evolves into a whole other level with no fault on him. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time doing the right thing. And again lack of communication throws a wrench in things.

The story leaves you hanging...you really gotta love these duets. Thankfully, book two,

    , is out May 2, 2018. I CANNOT wait!

♬ It's told in DUAL POV. If you read my books, you know I basically never do this. But Ryder... Oh, Ryder. *sighs* I couldn't resist.

♬ It's angsty. Like... ANGSTY AF, guys. I'm warning you now. There will probably be tears. I'm sorry in advance. (Sort of.)

"Don’t say I didn’t warn you: this story isn’t about getting what I wanted. Because I never wanted Ryder Woods.

Like a melody needs a harmony, like a rhythm needs a tempo, like a chord needs a key. I was more consumed by him than I ever was by the notes swirling in my bloodstream or the lyrics swimming through my head.

Even after he took every aching piece of my heart and crushed them to dust between nicotine-stained fingertips." 🎶

Felicity was not meant to fall in love. All she ever wanted was to get away from her toxic family, find a job, keep a low profile, and pour her soul into the songs she composed. But when you collide with a blinding, scorching star, you’re bound to get burned. And that’s exactly what happened when she met Ryder Woods, the musician with the raspy voice and the inspirations for fame, for the ability to share his music with the entire world.

Ryder was the beacon to her stormy sea. Felicity was the haven to his storm. But the timing was not right. Their dreams did not align. Two star crossed lovers with nothing and everything to lose, they created a powerful symphony that consumed them in its notes. But what happens when you reach the crescendo?

. How can I describe with simple words how much it touched me to the very core? How my soul was stripped bare, exposed to overwhelming feelings and senses that caressed it only to brutally flay it afterwards? The story of Felicity and Ryder was sheer beauty. Every song, every kiss, every confession and every heartbreak, they held

, a magnetic force that pulled me into its clutches and didn’t let go.

    made

an edgy read, and the element of suspense, surprise and painful secrets was masterfully handled by an author that never ceases to amaze me with her ingenuity and imagination. I loved the

, and the way she depicted the explosion created by the collision of two different dreams, of the starry-eyed girl that preferred shadows to light and the sexy musician that wanted to conquer the world.

Felicity was one of the most wonderful female characters ever created. She was broken in a way that made her stronger, compassionate, smart and determined to make a home of her own, free of the fear, the insecurity and the pain of her past. She wanted to hide, when she was capable of shining, whereas Ryder was her solar opposite. He wanted a singing career, with everything that follows suit. He was complex and flawed, and I loved being inside his head, witnessing his resolve cracking when it came to the petit girl with the worn guitar. Witnessing how much he could hurt her.

    was a

, and I can say without a doubt that it’s one of Julie’s best works.

Now excuse me as I lay down and cry my eyes out after that ending.

Ms. Johnson wrote a bit of a grittier tale with two imperfect characters with very different outlooks on life but find a connection they never expected. It made my heart race, had me questioning everything and on the edge of my seat.

In Faded we find Felicity moving to Nashville to start over. She’s on her own and likes it that way. She’s not had an easy life. She’s been hurt and it still hurting and as she slowly uncoveres the reasons why, her quiet life makes sense. Then she meets Ryder. He’s tortured in his own way and he’s looking for a way out of Nashville at least until Felicity. Taking a journey together with music at the center, they find a way through each of their defenses. While both Felicity and Ryder have dreams, they dream of very different things. But life has a way of changing course. As their lives take very different directions than they ever thought, not only are dreams forgotten but hearts are broken and lives are changed.

I felt Felicity and Ryder’s connection all the way to my soul. It was palpable. No matter how different they were, it was like their hearts found the other half in each other. Watching Felicity open up and Ryder let down his guard was honestly breathtaking. But their journey was not easy and as the story started to reach the climax, my heart was in my throat and I ached for them. I have no idea where the story will take these two. I know it’s going to hurt, I know they have a ways to go, but their connection was obvious and I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them.

I voluntarily read an ARC of this books. A is for Alpha B is for Books.

Since her very first published book in 2013 I've followed the trail of words from Julie Johnson. Over ten books later and her gift for story telling still glows bright. And although

holds a very special place in my heart, this book,

and these characters are my new favorite from this talented author. It's music, love, despair, friendship, and soul wrapped within the pages. It's emotionally exciting and exactly the kind of romance you can easily fall into without even realizing you're almost at the end. You feel a part of the intense and exciting energy of this story while it pulses with promise and vibrates with uncertainty at the same time.

takes readers on a journey a little different than other Julie Johnson tales. It's an edgier confection of an almost anti-hero with big dreams for fame paired with a simpler girl of more humble dreams and peace. Star-crossed lovers who form an immediate and soulful connection; he never counted on her and she never counted on what love would bring her. This is the intimate story of how they each reach for separate stars together.

Felicity Wilde is a tortured soul. The beauty of her though is the calming peace she represents in this story directly contradicting her past. She has a beautiful resiliency about her, for she is small but mighty. Not only in body and mind, but in her unrelenting spirit. This heroine never tries too hard and never apologizes for who she is and what she wants to become. Her openness to Ryder juxtaposed against the shell she keeps around her works perfectly for who she is. She's subtle, unassuming in such a grand way that Felicity Wilde leaves a lasting impact.

Ryder Woods is a tortured soul. The extravagance of him though is how that torture bucks against the very thing that makes him who he is. He has big dreams and a bigger heart and his placement of all those feelings sometimes goes awry. That's his thing though, when he feels he feels with his soul. It's what tethers his connection to Felicity, to music, and what deep down he believes. He's a boy with so much promise and so much to say but jumbled up in a maelstrom of afflictions.

Together, Felicity and Ryder weave together a story based on an affectionately musical and deeply soulful bond they establish early on in the book. Together, they're oil and water, fire and gasoline that ignite the most enthralling spark.

Julie Johnson's always succinct and wonderful writing in this one is somehow tighter yet more detailed. It's deliciously darker when we delve into the back stories of these two characters. It's crisp in the fact that those details aren't superfluous but a vital part to understanding these two and their story. It's tranquil at times when they're discovering who they are together and reaching into themselves discovering more of they are individually. All a testament to the precision of Johnson's story telling. I love how

starts, I love how Julie Johnson took it somewhere I never expected it go, and I love where it ended with the promise of so much more.

An aspiring young songwriter, Felicity is running from her past. Hopefully in Nashville she can start a new life under the radar. She is sweet, shy, and doesn’t crave the spotlight. Ryder too is a songwriter but a man in search of his dream, to be on stage, a star. When these two connect, it’s like a shooting star. It’s beautiful, bright and completely unexpected. But life is never sweet and easy, especially when your dreams get detailed.

Told in dual POVs, this story is filled with angst and sweet and poignant moments. The secondary characters add fun, reality and playful interactions. But when secrets are withheld and reality becomes ever real, something has to give.........someone’s dream wins and someone’s loses.

This story ends in a cliffhanger but it’s one that will makes you sad yet hopeful. Because I have to believe that when life throws you a curveball you learn from that mistake. Felicity is strong and resilient and I believe in her ability to be faithful to her beliefs and her convictions. And if love is true, Ryder and Felicity will get that HEA.

A special thanks goes to one of my book besties, TeriLyn Reviews, for introducing me to this author. She said I would love and I sooooooo did. Can’t wait for Unfaded!!!!

Wow. I was seriously not expecting to be so blown away with this book! The emotions it provoked!! The first chapter felt a little too flowery for me in the wording to where I really became skeptical, but once it got into the actual story I was completely sucked in and didn't want to come out! I shed tears off and on, and it wasn't just the relationship that I was crying for -- I was fully invested in these characters as individuals. The ending is a doozy too, and I was

The ending is a doozy too, and I was fully ready to jump into the next book,

, in hopes that I'd enjoy it just as much...

This is Felicity and Ryder's story. Felicity is on the run and lands herself in Nashville. She gets a job at a famous bar, and meets Ryder when he performs there one night with his band. They are instantly attracted and connected to each other, but Ryder knows that he is trying to do anything he can to leave Nashville while Felicity is just settling in. Opposites attract and regardless of their differences, they fall in love. There are some big life changes made, some sexy times, and some sad moments...and they will continue their story in the next book.

This alternated between Felicity and Ryder's POV.

Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

No. Instant connection and attraction? Yes.

4 stars. Ryder. I liked him. I understood his inner conflicts, but I appreciated how he owned up to his mistakes and how he cared for the h.

4.5 stars. Felicity. I really liked her. I felt bad for her upbringing and the curve balls that were always thrown at her -- but I appreciated how she remained a good person despite it all.

Moderate/high. I definitely shed some tears, but I wouldn't say that it ever turned into an ugly cry.

    Yes

Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story. It is in the last half of this book (60ish%) when they finally become intimate, but I felt like it was a good progression and not too slow.

    Yes

Yes, but mild and more about the band

    No

    No

    Yes

    Yes

This ends on a cliffy, but the conclusion of the duet is already available.

    This one is probably

for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences.
