Check, Please!: #Hockey, Vol. 1

Helloooo, Internet Land. Bitty here!Y’all... I might not be ready for this. I may be a former junior figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and very talented amateur pâtissier, but being a freshman on the Samwell University hockey team is a whole new challenge. It’s nothing like co-ed club hockey back in Georgia! First of all? There’s checking. And then, there is...

Scratch that, you don't have to like any of those things to read this book but once you do, you will LOVE them. Honestly, Ngozi's work changed my life. I will recommend this book to all of my friends. It was an honor to be able to write a review.

OMG SQUEEEEEEE THIS IS SO CUTE EVERYONE READ IT I LOVE THEM ALL why did I not know about this adorable webcomic sooner WHO DIDN'T TELL ME ABOUT THIS IT'S ADORABLE

You should envision this entire review in screamy caps because WOW I LOVE THIS. Ugh. I adore everything about

, but most of all the characters!!!

They are so precious and I love every single one of them. I would give up all my books for Bitty. I would swear off of pies for him to be happy forever. I have a great, undying need for him to be happy and in love with [redacted] forever. *melts into a puddle*

As you can tell, the majority of this review is just me gushing, so you might as well quit while you're ahead and just decide to read this book. (But, at the end I talk about a few really important things.)

AND YOU CAN EVEN FIND IT FREE LEGALLY!!! It's a webcomic that's available online, and it will forever stay online, so you can binge this whole book, and what's released of the books after it, on

I personally, after finishing the adorable ARC of Bitty's freshman & sophomore years (yes, this is college YA!!!) ended binging the entire webcomic that's available online too because I'm a greedy person and NOW I JUST WANT MORE

And, there's barely any differences between the published version and the online one, except that online the first few chapters are in black and white, and the rest in color, while in the printed published one, it's in full color.

So although you could read the whole thing online for free legally, it'd also be really cool if you bought a copy or checked it out from your library instead, so you can go and support the author!

(I say this out of pure greed as supporting the author hopefully means more fluffy webcomics.)

The wait for volume 2 will be KILLER because I just need more, and the cliffhanger is intense (thank goodness for online webcomics, as I said before.)

Now, for a more serious note: I do think it's valuable not to get

crazy over this, and hear me out before you come at me with pitchforks. Bitty represents a really privileged side of the LGBTQ+ community--as he's white and gay, which, when looked at on a spectrum of multiple LGBTQ+ identities, is pretty privileged when compared to, let's say, a black trans man.

And I know this is supposed to be a fluff book! (I assume) it's supposed to give you all the warm and gooey feels inside! And I really appreciate this and how this is a fun read that teens can lose themselves in and not have to worry about life, when they read. But, we also have to be careful of a few things:

    1.

The prevalence of m/m fiction when compared to f/f fiction is real and it exists and f/f fiction a lot of the time does not get the same support and love. It can be borderline fetishization. This can be really harmful, and it's good to acknowledge that not only should we avoid fetishizing m/m couples, especially when they're in a place of privilege compared to other LGBTQ+ couples.

    2.

He's white and gay. A lot of queer narratives are about white, gay boys vs. POC queer women. Understand that he isn't the whole community and that Bitty represents a really privileged portion of the LGBTQ+ community. (Also, don't gatekeep or erase other queer identities, please!)

    3.

    Did you love

? Great! How about picking up an #OwnVoices LGBTQ+ rep book afterwards and supporting some #OwnVoices authors, so you can get fiction from its source.

    I still really love

, but I also think that it would be great if we supported other #OwnVoices queer narratives with as much love as we do

. This doesn't mean you have to love every queer book you read, but try other non white gay male narratives out, if you haven't already. You might be surprised.

I know this is not much of a review so far, but hell if I’ll keep my emotions bottled inside. The truth is, this is really an amazing graphic novel. It was originally a webcomic – one of the most popular ones on Kickstarter and I’m so delighted it was picked to be traditionally published.

Book stores need this book. Libraries need this book. Schools need this book. YOU need this book in your room. I swear, this is the type of story that I’m going to turn to every time I feel under-the-weather and need some cheering up.

You can’t help but root for Eric Bittle. He’s a closeted gay kid who is just starting university as a freshman. Not only that, but he’s been accepted in the varsity hockey team – him, a former figure skater. He’s outgoing and shy, a jock and a baker, single but ready to mingle.

I could not get enough of him and the rest of these characters. There is not one single two-dimensional team player in this hockey group. I’m honestly disheartened to see some of these guys departing. Since this book spans over two years, there are logically certain characters graduating, which is both saddening and wonderful, but I’m sure we’ll see cameos from them in future volumes.

I really have nothing bad to say about this book. It captures all the right moments. It’s realistic, original, interesting, romantic at times and so very gay (if you’ll forgive the pun). I’m always excited about reading about university life because my own is not that exciting haha, so I have to experience vicariously through such stories.

I can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait for the next book. More Bitty! More Jack! More Bick (???) More hockey games (can’t believe I actually care about the sport). And more camaraderie! Please.

This series is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I read it first in college, reread it as I was graduating, and now I get to read the full first two years as a collected, physical book. Bitty owns my heart and I plan to cry about him for the rest of time. He’s my perfect soft, loving, pastry happy, gay, hockey playing southern gentleman.

READ THIS. Then get up to date with the webcomic so we can all yell together.

You all, this was the cutest. No, scratch that; Bitty is the cutest! And this graphic novel was nothing short of a joy to read! Hockey games, behind the scenes practices, a slow-burn attraction, an adorable romance, the most heartwarming main character ever. I mean, what else could you really ask for? Ngozi Ukazu has given us such a bright light of pure sunshine!

So basically, this is a published version of

that so many of my friends have been following and adoring for so very long. It stars a boy named Eric Bittle, AKA: Bitty, who is leaving his southern home to go to college in the north to play hockey, and he is gay and not yet out! He is also a very talented ice skater, but he has a little improving to do on the ice with hockey. And this book is broken up in two parts that are following him during his freshman year and sophomore year at Samwell University.

Bitty also makes video blogs where he talks about everything that’s going on his life. We get to slowly see the seasons change, and Bitty change as well during his vlogs. And he especially likes to talk about the captain of the hockey team, Jack, who he is pretty sure dislikes him, even though he is constantly helping him improve on the ice.

But we also get to see Bitty interact with the rest of his team: Ransom, Shitty, Holster, Chowder, Nursey, Lardo, and Dex (ew)! And Bitty builds some really beautiful friendships. Shitty (Lord, I will never get used to typing that name) is such a sweetheart who was so accepting and wonderful. Easily my favorite side character and my favorite brewing side romance with a certain someone.

I also loved getting to see Bitty move into the team house his sophomore year and really embrace his love for cooking. While his team also embraces their love for eating his baking. Seriously, seeing him build friendships and bond with others was so pure and so wonderful.

Lastly, I really want to talk about Ngozi Ukazu’s banter and how it is so perfect and so realistic. I legit tried to read this in public, and I was smiling so big and giggling out loud while sipping my coffee. The dialogue is on a tier above most graphic work out here, and the art is so beautiful and lovely on the eyes, too. I am in awe.

Overall, I just thought this was adorable perfection. The only reason I’m giving it four stars is because I feel like the story just started to really begin right before it ended. But the slow burn m/m romance is very precious, and I will scream from the highest rooftop that Bitty deserves the entire world forever and ever. I have such high hopes for junior and senior year! This is easily the best sports graphic work I’ve ever read.
