One would think that after reading an author’s body of work so extensively and so thoroughly, there would inevitably come a time when the magic would ebb or, at least, flicker somewhat, but when it comes to Kristen Ashley’s extraordinary style of storytelling, my infatuation with it only seems to grow, and every new book of hers promptly becomes a new favourite of mine. With an underlying message of true love being able to heal all wounds, Ashley delivers a stunning tale of loss and hope, of two heartbroken souls seizing a second chance at love, and of life’s greatest gifts often coming to us when we least expect them. This is one of those books I simply adored cover to cover, every scene striking a chord with me and making me love these characters more and more, proving once more that when Kristen Ashley sets to tell a truly unforgettable love story, she always delivers in spades.

    OMG.

    OHMYFREAKINGGOD!!

And I say that from the perspective of someone who has read, loved, and reviewed over 40 Kristen Ashley books. But this one just hit all the right marks.

KA is known for her rather lengthly books but I read this in one non-stop stilling. It was everything I could wish for. After finishing the last page of the epilogue I just sat there with my heart pounding, happy tears spilling out of my eyes, and the hugest smile on my face. This is undoubtedly one of MY TOP FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR!!

Johnny Gamble was an Alpha hero to his core. He was protective, possessive, loyal, kind-hearted, caring, sexy, swoony, sometimes infuriating but humble enough to admit his mistakes. His past has left his heart damaged, but when Izzy came into his life, he fell so hard for her. Izzy was strong, sassy, and down to earth. I loved them together!

Oh AND you should know -- there is no love triangle in this book. I know a few of you were worried about that based on the blurb but I cross my heart and promise you that there isn't even a whiff of a triangle. Johnny's ex is a painful part of his past and her arrival back in town is something he needs to deal with for sure, but at no point does he ever even consider getting back together with her. I just want to reassure you and promise that there is no triangle!

OK now I'm getting way ahead of myself here. Especially if you have no idea what the book is about yet and you're just staring at my review so far like "

" So let me backtrack and introduce you to this story:

As you can imagine from the title, it all begins with a hookup. Izzy wasn't the kind of girl to go home with anyone after the first date -- ever -- let alone after just meeting them. But Johnny was different. He was considerate, caring, and thoughtful. But also fuckhot and completely un-shy about how much he was interested in her.

She'd never met a man like him. He was Alpha to his core. It was in his very nature and soul to be the way he was. And she knew deep down that there was something deeply good about him.

Their night had been incredible, and their morning more so. And even though little time had passed since they met, she could feel a connection pass between them. A connection she hoped might be the start of something real.

But as much as he opened up to her in bed, she could tell he was keeping some walls up. And it didn't take long for her to learn his story. It was a small town and while she was new, everyone knew his history. Years ago, he'd been in love with a woman who the whole town was sure would be his forever. But she up and left him one day choosing another life over their relationship, leaving behind destruction and his broken heart in her wake.

Izzy was warned that the damage done to his heart might never heal and she deserved to be more than a runner up. She knew that. He knew that. And just as they were beginning to explore their something new, his ex returned. He had to deal with that. She had to deal with that. And I don't want to spoil the way things shake out but a) I promise there's no love triangle, b) I promise there's no stupid drama, and c) I promise that I loved everything about this story!

I think Johnny is a great example of how an Alpha can seem to be a dick but the more you understand them, the more you understand that it was you who'd read the situation wrong. Or, if they really were a dick, then their true colors shine through when they apologize. Every time Johnny said something that made me squinty, it was followed shortly with what I had to admit was a damn logical reason and usually after that came an understanding that no matter how good his reasons, he had been a dick and he was sorry. It's hard not to be forgiving of that.

I also found Izzy to be a very level headed and relatable heroine. She was smart. She might have been in new waters with the hookup but it didn't mean she wasn't able to see everything that was happening. She was hopeful that their hookup would lead to more but after learning of his past, she was understanding that it might never go anywhere. So it was up to him to show her how much she truly meant to him. And my #1 favorite thing about her was the way she did not care what anyone else thought of her life. People could gossip and judge to their hearts' content, but as long as she and Johnny were square and happy, that was the only thing that mattered.

This couple just made my heart happy. I could see how well they fit into each other's lives. Given no complications, I could easily have seen them slide right into a forever filled with love and beauty but they admittedly did hit a snag when his ex returned. Johnny knew he owed Izzy more than whatever was left of him. And while I was worried a little at first, the more I read, the more I realized that they were working their way in the right direction.

Just trust KA. This story is BEAUTIFUL.

And just... holy squeeeee!!! If you have any doubts about how truly and deeply Johnny feels for Izzy, his epic monologue at 47% (which I highlighted from start to fucking finish) will cure you of them once and for all. I promise you that he will steal your heart and I definitely paused to re-read that scene twice over because it was that good!

My favorite thing about them as a couple was how FUNCTIONAL they were. For a guy who came into a new relationship with as much baggage as he carried, it was really on him to bring the stability into their new relationship and reassure her given that all the drama was coming from his side. And he did. He COMMUNICATED. Explained things. Talked openly with her. Reassured when needed, and acted so responsably. I was so impressed!

Seriously EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK WAS PERFECT!!! THE FEELS!! THE FAMILY!! THE HOTNESS!!

This book almost reminded me a lot of KA's earlier 2012 releases which so many of us loved. It's kind of more in line with the feeling of

    ,

    ,

, and so on. There's not a lot of suspense (although there are a few scenes where things get very intense), it's more heavily focused on pure romance and there's a lot of delightful family dynamics which KA truly excels at. It really felt very Vintage KA in the best of ways right down to the classic "90% freak out" that any true old school KA fan will instantly recognize and holyy did the shit ever hit the fan. It was intense, messy, and yet I loved the way Johnny put everything on the line to protect the ones he loved.

If you're new to KA books, this would actually be a great one to start with if you want! It's very quintessential KA style and I think its storyline and characters will appeal to pretty much anyone who loves reading romance.

Also, I sincerely hope that Toby and Addie are the next book or a future book in this series because I absolutely adore them and would read their book in a heartbeat!

    Like I said,

Let me start off by saying I almost didn't read this book because of the blurb. Who wants to read a romance about a H's love for another woman and the h being second best? Not me. That said, it wasn't REALLY about his past love.

Did Johnny love his ex? Yes. Did he think they'd get married and have babies? Yes, he did. Did the ex come back into town and want him back? Yes. Did he ever consider getting back with his ex? NO! Did I feel he settled for Eliza? No. No, I did not.

Johnny is 34 years old. He's been in love before. She left him and broke his heart. Okay. That's happened to a lot of us at some point in our life, hasn't it? It's been 3 years since she's been gone, and yes, he's had other short term 'relationships' during that time, but he never led any of them on about having a future with him. He wasn't ready to risk his heart, and didn't want to be unfair to the women he had sex with, so he was always upfront with them. I actually respected that. He wasn't a manwhore and

left him, so having sex with OW while "in love" with his ex didn't bother me. And honestly, I don't think he STAYED in love with her for all that time. I think he naturally fell out of love with her, went through the stages of grief so to speak, and by the time Eliza came into his life...he was over her.

Eliza. I dug this chick. She was a good person, a hard worker, loved her sister, loved her friends...loved her mother. She was tough, loyal, and sensible! She'd had relationships. She liked sex, but had never had a ONS before Johnny and ya know...I liked that about her too. I'm not a fan of "hooking up" to tell you the truth. I

emotion with my sex. I just do. But, I was okay with Eliza letting herself 'go' and just 'be', because it was JOHNNY GAMBLE she did the hooking up with and every woman deserves at least one night with a Johnny Gamble. And of course, we all knew it wasn't going to be a ONS in the end.

I liked the ex wasn't made out to be a psycho, just a woman who made the wrong choices in life. I liked how things ended btx them, him not hating her, her not hating him. Him wanting the best for her, her wanting the best for him though she'd always love him and had hoped for that second chance. It felt right. I hope she finds a HEA with someone else.

So issues? Why not a higher rating?

Honestly, it was too easy! Johnny is too perfect.(at least in my Alpha bf book) I mean...perfect. Besides a sometimes too quick temper, and a need to be bossy (scratch that, I like bossy) he was the perfect male specimen, husband and father material. He freaking changed diapers...and it wasn't even his kid!

Yes, he broke things off with Eliza after his ex called and said she was coming back into town. And he did seem to be treating Iz like all his other past women at first, but I think both reactions were knee-jerk. But get this people...Eliza let him go! Yes, she wanted something more with him and was bummed it wasn't going to work out, but she did

    chase after him. She did

plead with him to give them a chance. She

get angry and turn into a shrew. She

decide to settle for second best either. She licked her shallow wounds and moved the hell on! SHE. LET. HIM. GO. It was Johnny who opened his eyes a couple weeks later and chased her! Chased! Loved it!

But the head out of ass came so early in the book it made for a boring relationship read at times.

There are the usual paragraphs of dialogue I have to reread to understand, and some still didn't make sense.

There is the usual rambling minutiae of making a cup of coffee or whipping up a batch of guac.

I also don't get these women who talk about ALL the intimate details of their sex life with their gfs. Especially someone like Eliza who was a bit prissy and shy (at least outside of bed with Johnny) so it seemed out of character.

I didn't like Addie walking in on them in the barn, and then blabbing it to everybody. Eliza should have freaked about it. Johnny didn't seem to care either. What?

I wish we would have been shown the confrontation scene with Shandra, not told about it.

    The

seemed only thrown in for drama sake, and was resolved so quickly I didn't see the point.

The sister drama happened, but then we get "told" she gets over it fairly quickly, and I'm not really sure how much I actually liked Addie...or Toby. Who I imagine the next book might be about.

And Margot was a busybody, but I liked her. I just don't understand how everyone can

how special the heroines are in K.A. books with just a glance, or because they make the hero laugh.

I expected Iz's ex to get involved somehow, but he never did.

    Anyhoo...I enjoyed

    way, way, way more than

and though I didn't LOVE IT, I'm left with a good feeling about reading future K.A. books.

update 12/22/17 Val liked it! So I'm gonna give it a try

it's a sad, sad day when I'm not sure I want to read a new K.A. book (besides the Honey series which i never considered reading) H in love with another woman, heroine willing to take the leftover scraps....sigh. At least it's not another 20 year separation for stupid reasons, that's something I guess.

I think most fans of Kristen Ashley will enjoy this book. There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about it! I listened to the audiobook and the narration was good. It was one of those books I didn’t want to hit pause on. Crossing my fingers the next ‘Moonlight and Motor Oil’ book will be a Toby and Addi book!

    , I became...less than enthused.

    And then there was

    .

    And my head exploded.

To be frank: I have talked a LOT of shit about some of KA's more recent releases.

I have been brutal in several reviews - no seriously - BRUTAL.

Don't believe me? I'll link some of those reviews at the end of this bad boy.

And I have been called a fair-weather friend for those reviews.

    A

fan for some of those reviews.

A drama seeking whore who only read those books to write rants for those reviews.

    And you know what?

    I scoff at that.

Because I am one of her biggest fans.

    BIGGEST.

I have read over 52 of her books, people.

    FIFTY-TWO.

And as true FANS, we are allowed to be passionate and critical of stuff we don't like from authors we love.

People don't read and buy 52 things they know they are going to dislike.

    That's just bad math.

Most fans (funds and space allowing, of course) get everything they can get their hands on from whatever their fandom is.

Just look at EVERY fucking booktubers "Harry Potter Shelf," for fucks sake.

They literally must have asked mom and dad for every edition, version, companion book, wand, what have you, for every Christmas and birthday since they were ten years old.

And I dig it. We all like to surround ourselves with stuff we love.

So it brings me total fucking JOY to have loved this thing.

I truly enjoyed every minute of it.

Yes, it got a little long-winded at times.

Yes, the second half was kind of without any of the major climactic moments I was expecting.

    But, you know what?

Reading this made me feel like I was back in 2011 reading

, which was my first KA ever.

Did I love it as much as

    ?

    No.

Is it one of the best KA's I've ever read?

    No.

Probably won't be for you either.

    But that's ok.

    Because I just

    it.

Reading this was like wrapping a familiar warm blanket around my shoulders and saying, Ahhhh....

    I really liked Johnny.

    He was swoony and KA-sexy.

And I really, really liked Eliza.

Yes, she was a hippie-ish, cooking, decorating, CUTE dress-wearing KA heroine, as per usual.

    But, she was also PRACTICAL.

    She wasn't an idiot.

    She wasn't delusional.

She wasn't Justice, the retarded "poet's soul" from

whom I wanted to tag with a mack truck.

    But, most of all?

SHE ONLY CALLED JOHNNY "HONEY" FIVE TIMES.

Also worth noting is that KA changed up some stuff.

She didn't have people chin-lifting, saying "eyes" and constantly wax poetic about how "cute" everything was. She also didn't go into detail about drywall and slowly kill the parentheses button.

All of which I loved and appreciated.

    So, #WINNING.

TL;DR: Looking forward to re-reading this one (as I re-read ALL of my 3+ star KA's) over and over and over...

And people, Eliza or Iz/Izzy is a woman who at first you may think could be a yes gal... but instead showed from the start how strong and capable she is... she is someone to be admired. She has overcome a horrific childhood ... but came away with a loving heart fostered by her mother who has passed. She has a sister with a young nephew she loves and at first, she thinks this is her life.

Izzy had just run from her icky stalker-ish ex. She resettled in a town an hour away from where she works. She learned of this place from her co worker who seems to be her best friend. Izzy is a rescuer... of horses, dogs, cats and things. She learned very early on from necessity, to appreciate the beauty of things needing repair. Shabby Chic may have been the style a hot minute ago... but for Izzy it is a way of life... turning distressed things beautiful with her care and repair.

Johnny Gamble is the mythical creature all women dream of... the type of man who has manners, looks out for the one he loves and will do all the "little things" that mean so much without knowing how they impact the woman he is doing them for...His life wasn't perfect but was night and day to Izzy's.

Johnny 's family had been in this small town for generations. The grandfather opened a gas station and saw how they could become more than that. Garage repair, then mini marts were added and over time and a son growing and having his own... so did the amount of Gamble Garages. Johnny loved the garage and was out there with his dad from the start. Things were good until they weren't, when his mother left his dad. Johnny and his brother Toby were all the dad had left and that was the life these 3 had. They had each other, grandad until he died and lucky for Johnny and Toby, his father's close friends, Margot and Charles.

So Johnny grew up with a woman who knew how to mother two young lost boys. She taught them all the right things so that when Johnny fell for his girl, he treated her right.

And he did... they were the town's Romeo and Juliet...Until Juliet made a choice and she didn't choose Johnny. That was three years ago and he hasn't smiled or laughed since. Broken, he would still be the polite guy but he had his wall up. He had a few "experiences" over the years... making sure everyone knew there was nothing to look forward to...Because Love broke him and there was no going down that road again.

KA brings these two characters together, works her KA magic, gives them some emotional hurdles to overcome and makes sure there is slammin', hot, sexy times and real connections between them. There will be times when assumptions are made and have to be cleared up... there will be siblings involved and that needs to be handled... But overall this is love story true and true...with all the yummy stuff KA is known for...

Since the title of this book is The Hookup (Moonlight and Motor Oil, #1), I think I can safely assume... there will be a second one coming and hopefully it will be with Toby and Addie, Johnny's and Izzy's siblings. I am more than ready to tackle that tale...cause Toby speaks in complete sentences too.

My biggest issue why I didn't fully fall in love with this book is because the two protagonists seemed too perfect at times. Sometimes, Izzy feels like she came out of a Disney fairytale. She literally has a canary resting on her shoulder when she cooks breakfast in the morning.
