Alternating between the past and present,

Friendship blooms, and as summers pass, so does love. But love doesn't always work the way they want, and in the end, their story ends in heartache.

Eleven years later, now a pediatric resident, Macy thinks her life is where she wants it to be—a good job, a decent man, an uneventful life. But it all comes crashing down when she and Elliot cross paths once again.

Elliot is not letting this chance slip through his fingers. Macy has always been in his heart; his feelings are just as strong, just as intense. He wants to know what happened, and he wants a second chance.

Just when you're floating on air from reading Macy and Elliot's growing friendship and blooming love, you get punched in the gut and your heart is wrenched out of your body. This book is a rollercoaster of emotions in beautiful prose, let me tell you.

It was so heartwarming to see Macy and Elliot grow up together and become closer each day. Their past was the sweetest, one where you can't control the smile on your face when you think about it. They're friends, but

. These two people understood each other, empathized with one another, and stood by each other when they were young.

Aside from Macy and Elliot's relationship, we see different dynamics in the story—Macy and her mother through her mother's letters, Macy and her father, Elliot and his family. Those relationships are what made Macy and Elliot who they are as people. Christina Lauren made wonderful characters, people I adore.

Since the story was told in Macy's POV, we get an intimate view of her thoughts and feelings. I adore Macy and admire her for her strength and resilience. Getting inside her head was an emotional experience, but it was one I would never regret. In this story, while I loved Elliot, I loved Macy even more.

This book is unlike any of Christina Lauren's works, but sometimes different does not mean it's a bad thing. This book is poignant and unforgettable, and will tug on one's heartstrings.

-It never occurred to me that love could be anything other than all-consuming. Even as a child, I knew I never wanted anything less.

Macy Sorensen is a 28 yr. old woman living in San Francisco. She works in pediatrics in critical care, and is engaged to a great guy. She lives a life she’s content with, but doesn’t ever fully invest her heart. Then a chance encounter with the guy who used to be her entire world makes her feel completely unraveled. Her perfect little life she’s created is turned upside down. She hasn’t seen Elliot Petropoulos in 11 years since she abruptly pushed him out of her life. He was her first real friend, her first love, her first everything.

Macy met Elliot when she was 13, and he was 14. She grew up in Berkeley, & after the death of her mother, her dad bought them a cabin they could vacation at. Elliot lived next door and they became very close. From the start things were always easy and effortless between them. Macy could always talk to Elliot about anything, & he was her safe place. He was her person, the one who understood her best.

Elliot can’t believe he’s seeing Macy again. He’s never loved another woman, and hasn’t seen her since high school. After a decade apart he will do whatever it takes to reconnect with her.

Macy soon realizes she never got over Elliot. There was a hole in her heart that had never healed that only he could fill. Seeing him again, she has to face that she’s still in love with him, and probably always will be. She’s spent the last 11 years angry & hurt. It’s time to face the past, and move forward.

This was such a beautiful emotional story told between past & present about two soulmates that meet when they are both in 8th grade. They become each other’s home. I adored Elliot from the skinny nerd to the sexy man. His heart is absolutely breathtaking. This was the first women’s fiction novel from Christina Lauren, & it was fantastic. It had a completely different feel to it than the other books I’ve read by them. This is one of those books that touched my heart & I’ll think about for a while. Just loved it!

-He’s grown into the kind of stranger I would dreamily admire.

-He’s my person. He’s always been my person. My best friend, my confidant, probably the love of my life.

-There’s an intensity between us that has always been there.

-“I’ve never wanted anyone the way I want you.”

-I want it all with you.

is by far, different from any of the previous books I have read by Christina Lauren. I was expecting a funny and equally sexy romantic comedy but what I got was a slow building story of first love, lost love, deep sorrow, and ultimately a second chance at a once in a lifetime kind of love. I really didn’t know how to feel about this book. The first half, for me, was too slow. We get the entire story told in the Heroine’s, POV, and at times I wished that we could get inside the Hero’s head. The traveling from past to present helped to depict the depth of the feelings the main characters had for each other. Their shared connection through their mutual love of books made the story so painfully sweet. I’m not the biggest fan of the

, but for authors I love, I will persevere and I’m so glad that I did because, by the time I got halfway through this one, I fell so hopelessly in love! This is a

type of story. It sneaks up on you slowly and then before you know it, you will have tears streaming down your cheeks and be overcome by overwhelming emotions!!

Macy and Elliot met when they were around twelve. After Macy’s mother passed away, she and her father were beyond grief-stricken, but her mother left a journal of instructions for her father to follow in order to help him raise and care for their beloved daughter. Her mother asked that if it looked like life was getting Macy down, that her father needed to take her somewhere to get her mind off of her sorrows and bring back the light of happiness in her eyes. So Macy’s dad buys a summer home about an hour’s drive away from San Francisco, and it’s during her first walk through her bedroom that she meets a boy with dark curly hair and soulful hazel eyes hanging out in her walk-in closet, engrossed in a book.

The two hit it off from day one and over the next several years they become the best of friends. Always waiting underneath the surface are feelings deeper than friendship and no matter how badly Macy wants to move to the next level past

, her fear of things going wrong and losing Elliot forever, keep the two from becoming more. Elliot wants to be more so desperately but is ever the patient friend because he too couldn’t imagine his life without Macy in it. Then something happens that tears them apart and eleven years go by before they come face to face again.

Macy and Elliot are almost thirty and it would seem that in all the time they’ve spent apart, neither have really been living their lives. They’ve been merely existing. Macy is a pediatric surgeon in her first year of residency. She’s engaged to a forty-two-year-old single father who she has at best, lukewarm feelings for. You will feel like shaking her when you realize that she seems to be content with a relationship that she could live with or without just as easily. The minute she and Elliot run into each other it’s like she's waking up from an eleven-year coma. And it’s the same for Elliot too. I wanted them to go back to what they had but the wall made up of pain and incredible hurt still seems to exist between them. I was dying to find out what had happened all those years ago to cause such a terrible rift and still had such a hold on the two of them.

When everything is revealed, my heart split wide open and I had tears streaming down my face. What an emotional rollercoaster that I never expected to ride while reading a Christina Lauren book!! These two can write gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, and emotionally gripping stories just as amazing as their romantic comedies! I am a fan for life!

This is a second chance love story....Elliot and Macy were one another’s first love.... The story is told in alternating time periods between their teenage years and 11 years later when they are reunited.... Macy and Elliot started out as friends bonding over a love of books and words.... Their friends to lovers story develops so sweetly and slowly and perfectly.... I just could not possibly figure out what could have torn these two apart....

11 years later and Macy and Elliot run into each other at a coffee shop.... The connection is still there, but are Macy’s walls too high and too thick to be broken down? What happened to break these two up in the first place? What tragedy and secret has been haunting Macey for all these years? Well you’re going to need to read this book to find out! And I strongly encourage you to do so..... this book has all the feels and leaves you with a huge smile on your face....

Trust me my non romance loving friends even you will be entranced by this book.... and your eyes will not roll I promise.... it is almost impossible not to fall in love with Elliot and Macy and this remarkable love story....

Love and Other words is a second chance love story told in alternating timelines about two people who met and fell in love while growing up and then re-met eleven years later. Macy and Elliot met during an open house when Macy found Elliot reading a book in a closet. Macy's father purchased this second home for them after his wife (Macy's mother) passed away. Macy and her father would go to their cabin home on weekends and spend their summers there. Since the day they first met, when she was 13 and he was 14, Macy and Elliot bonded over their love of books and became best friends who fell in love during their teenage years. They could talk about anything and shared a very close bond. Then their relationship ended, and they had not seen or spoken to each other in eleven years. Then the two meet accidentally in a coffee shop, eleven years later. and the spark is still there. There is a complication of course, isn't there always with romance books - and yes, this is a romance book and a coming of age story rolled into one -even if it is classified as something else.

I enjoyed this book from the get-go even though it looks as if it took me 5 days to read. I started this book and had to finish other reading obligations but then tore through this one yesterday. This book is very easy to become absorbed in. I literally could not put this book down. I really enjoyed both characters and really rooted for them, wanting desperately to know what tore them apart eleven years ago.

Love and other words is an easy fast read which sucked me in. There was a time or two while reading this book that I wanted to shake both characters - one more than the other. I enjoyed reading about their friendship when they were younger where it was evident that both wanted to be more than friends and the reader could see them flirting with the idea and watch them get close then retreat, get close, hint around at it, then retreat, until finally they became a couple and then.... READ THE BOOK!

There is a bit of a reveal which I have mixed feelings about. I can't go into detail, so I won’t give any spoilers away, but I thought "you have got to be kidding me" and "seriously, come on". Grrr In some ways this felt cliched but it was successful in making me feel several emotions – just as the characters felt several emotions as well.

This is the type of book that can easily be read in one day! It pulls at the heartstrings and delivers! I could feel their friendship, their angst, their chemistry, the love, the heartbreak, the spark, the re-connection. While reading this book I felt as if I were on this emotional journey with Macy and Elliot.

Oftentimes, I find romance novels tend to not go beyond the surface and are often just formulaic.

is a little formulaic, but what makes this so enjoyable is that the characters have depth. While they have their flaws, they are both likable and I loved reading about Elliot and Macy’s friendship and how they came to fall in love. There is also a level of emotional intensity that I was not expecting. While there is a happy ending, there are some unexpected tragedies.

I was obsessed while reading this and I had to force myself to put it down! It was a surprisingly good and satisfying escape from the dark thrillers that I normally read. This is the first book by Christina Lauren that I have read and I now plan on reading ALL of their books asap!
