When another murder hits too close to home, Cat starts to feel like she and her retreat are cursed, but she persists in delving into the recent murder and the death of her ex-husband. New readers of Lynn Cahoon's books will find this story a rich mystery within a mystery, with both likeable and not-so-likeable characters. Though part of a series, I feel this book can easily stand on its own, providing just enough background to catch a new reader up to speed, without giving away too much about the previous books. I found this story easy to read and hard to put down. In fact, I read it in one day, something I haven't done in a long time. I suspected several people of being the murderer throughout the book, but I didn't really guess the culprit until the end. The only thing I didn't really like about the story was Cat's lukewarm attitude toward her "boyfriend" Seth... maybe because she's still processing her feelings about her ex-husband. We didn't see a lot of Seth in this story, and I'm hoping we'll see more of him in the future. I was so excited to get an advance copy of this book and am happy to provide my honest review.

I love the Cat Latimer writer’s retreat mystery series. Book 3 is excellent! Cat has her hands full and her mind occupied with her new eccentric group of aspiring writers; her own writing deadlines; and her best friend and business partner, Shauna’s distraction with the local rich landowner she’s dating. I found myself immediately engrossed in the story as Cat welcomes her new group and continues to delve into the secrets surrounding her ex-husband, Michael’s death. The talented Ms. Cahoon exper

I found myself immediately engrossed in the story as Cat welcomes her new group and continues to delve into the secrets surrounding her ex-husband, Michael’s death. The talented Ms. Cahoon expertly sets up the storyline so that recurring characters; new visitors; and old friends are there to help Cat research and sleuth as she struggles to sort through Michael’s belongings and make a success of her Victorian B&B in Aspen Hills, CO.

The sudden death of Shauna’s beau, Kevin, is a shock, and evidence points to Shauna as the likeliest person to have killed him. However, the Mob is in the mix, and the tension ratchets with each page turned, until all the details of Michael’s past are gathered and revealed, and Cat, her friends, and visitors are safe from his enemies. The victim, Kevin, had his own set of problems that quickly shed light on his demise.

This story will set your pulse pounding as you follow the author peeling back all the layers needed to expose the inside secrets and free Cat of danger allowing her to move on with her new life and her current relationship with Seth. Great story!

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by the author.

Cat Latimer has her January writers' retreat people coming. This is her fourth retreat, but only one has gone off without a hitch. This time, the partners are back in the middle of a murder investigation. Cat's friend and business partner, Shauna, has recently gotten engaged and is spending a lot of time at Kevin's ranch. She heads over for dinner, taking a pot of stew for dinner. After returning to the house, she does not trust Cat to get breakfast ready, she is woken in the middle of the night by Cat's Uncle Pete. Kevin is dead, he was poisoned and the poison was in the stew. Not only is Shauna devastated, but she is also a suspect, especially since she recently bought rat poison at the local hardware store. Cat is now investigation Michael's death (her ex-husband) and Kevin's. Will she be able to find the real murderer before something happens to Shauna? Will she be able to find out what happened to Michael without putting herself in danger?

I really enjoyed Shirley, a retired police detective who is on the retreat so she can write a police procedural. She was so funny. You could tell she really liked Uncle Pete, but she tells everyone it is a professional relationship. There is a lot of teasing going on there. She also helps Cat with her investigation of Michael's death and they do some sleuthing together. I hope she sticks around in the next few books as a love interest for Uncle Pete. The other members of the retreat didn't play much of a role in this book, except for the College Student who was there in the college spot. I really enjoy the relationship Cat, Shauna and Seth have in these books. They are partners and best friends, almost like siblings, although Seth really wants to rekindle the high school romance he had with Cat. I was glad to see Michael's murder solved, but I think there is still a bit more for Cat to find out. It is fun to visit Cat and her gang in Colorado and I look forward to my next visit.

Would anyone like to join me for a writers' retreat? I am so excited to have been sent Of Murder and Men by Lynn Cahoon to read and review. I could not put it down. I loved the first chapter and how grumpy main character Cat came across. It was a great way to open the book and helped this character truly feel real. While running a writer's retreat, Cat who is supposed to be penning her next best selling book, is steal dealing with packing up her deceased ex husband's papers, home office and trying to figure out how he was murdered. Throw in the fact that she is struggling to deal with her best friend and business partners new relationship with someone she doesn't like and a freezing recently renovated attic writing space. I have to say Lynn does a really great job of creating a very good plot and conflict!

Of Murder and Men is the third book in Lynn Cahoon’s Cat Latimer Mystery series. This is a well-written story, with well-developed characters, that moves along at a steady pace. The book is an easy read and Ms. Cahoon’s writing style flows smoothly and she provides good background information about the characters. The characters are relatable and there are enough twists, turns, and red herrings to hold a reader’s attention. This is a clean cozy mystery featuring no gratuitous sex, adult language

Catherine ‘Cat’ Latimer is an author and the owner of Warm Springs Writer’s Retreat in the small college town of Aspen Hills, Colorado. Cat and her best friend, cook, planner, and manager, Shauna Mary Clodagh, are preparing to host their third writer’s retreat in the home Cat inherited from her ex-husband, Michael, who recently passed away. Shauna has been a little distracted lately because she’s been spending more and more time with her fiancé, Kevin Shield. Cat’s high school sweetheart and current boyfriend, Seth Howard, is the handyman helping with renovations and transporting guests, and her Uncle Pete has been the local police chief for twenty years. Cat continues to try to come to terms with Michael’s death, sort through his papers and books, and unravel the mystery surrounding him so she can move on with her life and developing relationship with Seth. One of the retreat guests, Shirley Mann, is a retired detective from Alaska. Shirley has asked Pete to help her research a cold case for her book. After talking with Cat and Pete, Shirley decides Michael’s case is interesting and wants to help Cat. Shauna discovers Kevin is missing and asks Pete to help find him. Pete discovers Kevin’s body in his horse barn and poisoning is ruled as the cause of death. It isn’t long before they learn more about Kevin’s past and no shortage of suspects.

Oh my goodness was this a good book! I guess a book is really something when you read past the 20% warnings on your Kindle and the battery just dies on you. Luckily, I own a backup Kindle ;)

Cat Latimer has her January writers' retreat people coming. Since we didn't have a book for December, we find out that the retreat for that month actually went on without incident. Cat's friend and business partner, Shauna, has fallen for a local landowner and isn't going to be at the retreat much this time

Cat Latimer has her January writers' retreat people coming. Since we didn't have a book for December, we find out that the retreat for that month actually went on without incident. Cat's friend and business partner, Shauna, has fallen for a local landowner and isn't going to be at the retreat much this time but she's still got everything under control especially after Cat confesses to her that she forgot to turn the oven on to bake a breakfast casserole.

Shauna later gets the news that her boyfriend, recently turned fiance' was found dead in his horse barn after having gotten up in the middle of the night to answer a text. Meanwhile Cat is still looking into Michael's murder and now she feels like she needs to look into Kevin's as well.

The stand out visiting character in this book was Shirley, a retired police detective who is on the retreat so she can write a police procedural. I just got the biggest kick out of her. On one hand she really likes Uncle Pete but she tries to brush it off as a professional friendship. She also grabs onto the whole Michael murder mess and won't let go until she finds something useful. I really hope we do get to see more of Shirley.

I liked the little character cross-over that the author did from her Tourist Trap series. Cross-overs are fun, like introducing one set of your friends to another set. And that's how I feel about the characters in this series as well as the Tourist Trap series. It's always fun to go back to visit them.

I was glad to see some of the items that had not been resolved since the first book finally put to rest. I think Cat will always have questions about Michael but her main issues are at peace now. I'm anxious to see how the different things that Shauna, Shirley and Seth have suggested they do for the retreat turn out as well. Long live the writer's retreat!

I feel bad to DNF it. It is a well-written cozy mystery, very culinary (that I normally enjoy), and it is a nice holiday read. My problem with

    - it is already the book#3 in the series. I honestly didn't know this fact, when I requested an ARC.

Even if the author tried to do her best to get an occasional reader to know what happened (more or less) in the previous books, I couldn't get rid of a feeling that I missed something. I lacked the background story, and even the worst - the emotional connection to the characters, the understanding of the whole picture and their role in it.

I would strongly recommend to read the previous books of the series before you pick up the book #3. It is not a stand alone IMO.
